The purpose of this project is to design a platform for Title I public schools in Detroit, MI who want to reduce the chance of removing their arts and music programs and create a space that aids in encouraging exposure to technology. This will result in an increase in student engagement and enrichment driven by gamified elements integrated into an extended mixed reality experience. The development of the TeachXR platform is an exploration of how digital technologies can be used to effectively create experiences that combine virtual and real-world components in order to more effectively engage students in the classroom. This will result in not only the ability to maintain art and music programs in the event that funding and interaction is limited, but it will also result in the exposure of students to mixed reality experiences and emerging technologies.

Many public schools are choosing to remove art and music programs in order to direct more funding and resources toward STEM programs. The reason art programs are usually the first to be cut due to funding is because they are excluded from state-mandated testing and assessments that determine the school’s sustainability. For public school entities in low-income areas, there is a need for low-cost solutions that can address insufficient funding and resources. In education, advances in technology has helped to create equity in learning environments where it can help school entities that experience a lack of learning materials and support through the introduction of digital technologies.
